Meanwhile, other fans were keen to express their dissatisfaction with the decision not to return Don Warrington’s beloved character to the show.

An online user wrote: “Amazing news. Can’t wait. I miss them all (hopefully The Commissioner is back) @donbwarrington,” another agreed: “Needs @donbwarrington to be there or missing a huge talent.”

Fans are keen to understand if Don’s alter-ego will make a comeback after season 14 wrapped up on a cliffhanger surrounding his character, Commissioner Selwyn Patterson.

Don has played Selwyn since 2011 so fans were left scratching their heads when Selwyn decided to walk away from the police force, and it looked as though his character was leaving for good.

The series 14 finale saw Selwyn reject an offer of his job being reinstated after being replaced. Selwyn rejected the proposal and expressed his desire to take some time to visit his daughter, Andrina.

In the final scenes, he offered his goodbyes to Catherine Bordey. He told her, “Promise me you will look after yourself and them,” he added, gesturing to his ex-colleagues.

“Promise me this isn’t farewell, but au revoir,” the mayor said as he told her, “Au revoir then, my friend,” before zipping off in a taxi.

Death in Paradise can be streamed via BBC iPlayer.
