Armed police swoop as ‘man with a machete’ terrorises community

“Everyone is worried,” said one resident as police arrest a suspect

Armed police were scrambled to a suburb in Tameside tonight following reports a man armed with a machete was terrorising the community.

One suspect has been arrested on suspicion on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon as Greater Manchester Police moved to assure people there was ‘no current threat to the public’.

The drama started earlier this evening with residents reporting to police that there was a man armed with a machete in the Medlock area of Droylsden.

Among them was a resident who contacted the Manchester Evening News and said that ‘everyone is worried’.

Greater Manchester Police dispatched armed police and shortly afterwards a man was arrested.

A spokesperson said: “Armed officers have made an arrest this evening after several reports of a man with a machete in the Medlock Vale area of Droylsden – he is in custody on suspicion of affray and possession of an offensive weapon; there is no current threat to the public.”

There are no reports of anyone suffering injuries.
