The force said residents can expect to see an increased police presence
Armed police are on the streets tonight as part of an operation in Manchester city centre.
Dramatic images show officers standing guard outside buildings in Castlefield.
Greater Manchester Police confirmed that armed officers have been deployed as part of the operation, but did not disclose the nature of the incident.
A spokesperson for the force said: “Armed officers are currently conducting enquiries on Bridgewater Street and the surrounding areas in the city centre.
“We do not believe there to be a risk to the wider public but you will likely see an increased police presence.”
Images from the scene show plain clothes officers in tactical vests on the street outside the buildings.
Two armed plain clothes could been seen moving towards a building, with one holding what appeared to be a riot shield.
Officers are in place on Barton Street, off Liverpool Road near to the Cask pub. They have also been seen on Southern Street.
Armed police have been seen patrolling the streets outside. Members of the public have been watching on as the operation continues.
