Iraqi missiles killed 39 people and injured 43 in the Iranian cities of Bakhtaran, Hamadan and Bostan, and Iran retaliated by attacking Iraqi cities with artillery fire and air raids, the Iranian authorities reported. Iran also threatened to attack Baghdad. The Iraqi attacks, using ground-to-ground missiles, fired over distances up to 225 km inside Iran, constituted a further escalation of the month-old campaign of raids on civilian targets.
Gujarat Bans Strikes
THE GUJARAT GOVERNMENT banned strikes in all departments, including the assembly secretariat and that of the High Court, under the Gujarat Essential Services Maintenance Act, 1972, according to an official announcement. The situation in Ahmedabad, which was peaceful for the past 11 days, took a violent turn when the police burst teargas shells and resorted to lathi-charge to disperse a group of anti-reservationists.

Border Tensions
ALL BSF OUTPOSTS in the 4 km Amjadnagar-Belonia stretch along Tripura’s international boundary with Bangladesh have been put on maximum alert, following reports of a “massive” build-up by the Bangladesh Rifles and army units in the area, officials said. A PTI correspondent, who toured the area in Tripura’s South district, found construction work on the controversial Muhuri River project in full swing under the protective cover of armed BDR detachments.
PM Slams US
PRIME MINISTER RAJIV Gandhi has accused the US of “looking the other way” while Pakistan is making an atom bomb and has expressed the fear that “we will be landed with a bomb in the subcontinent”. Gandhi said Pakistan was very close to making a nuclear bomb if it had not already got one, and nothing was being done to stop it.
