Amazon Auto launches in the US, with Hyundai cars now available for purchase on the platform | Technology News

Starting today, Amazon users in the US can purchase a brand new Hyundai car on the e-commerce platform. The online shopping giant announced that its car dealership offering called Amazon Auto in partnership with South Korean automaker Hyundai Motors is now live in over 48 American cities, including Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Houston, New York, San Francisco, Seattle, and Washington DC

Amazon shoppers in these cities can purchase vehicles that have been listed for sale by local car dealers directly on the platform. The company said that it is looking to expand Amazon Auto to other regions in 2025.

The potential car buyers can look for cars that they want on Amazon Auto based on their preferences of make, model, trim, colour, and other features. The company said that customers will see “transparent, upfront pricing” for every vehicle.

Buyers can also trade-in their current car for a new ride based on an evaluation of the vehicle generated by an “independent third party.” They can also schedule pick-up times at their local car dealership. In terms of financing options, Amazon Auto states that it will be handled by the local dealership for now with Amazon serving as an intermediary.

Currently, the car-selling service only applies to new vehicles. It is unclear if Amazon plans on expanding the offering to cover used cars as well.

Amazon-Hyundai partnership

First announced in 2023, the partnership between Amazon and Hyundai car dealers has positives for both parties. Hyundai car dealerships can reach a wider range of shoppers on Amazon and eliminates the need for them to build their own platform. On the other hand, the arrangement allows Amazon to make big-ticket sales while foraying into a new lucrative market segment without having to deal with the hassles of maintaining storage space for inventory and logistics involved in shipping cars.

Besides Hyundai, Amazon said it plans on inking deals to offer vehicles from other automakers down the road.
