All international operations at Pune International Airport, including passenger handling, baggage systems, security protocols, and operational workflows, shifted to the New Integrated Terminal Building (NITB) on Tuesday.
Five international flights, including new services introduced this year by various airlines, have moved their operations to NITB. While around 23 flights are currently operating at the Pune airport, over 80 per cent of these operations take place in the new terminal.
Pune airport director Santosh Dhoke stated that all international flights have been transitioned to the new building, while only some domestic flights, operated by IndiGo and regional airlines like FLY91, remain in the old terminal. He added that all operations will eventually move to the new terminal.
NITB spans an area of 22,000 square metres and has a passenger handling capacity of 7 million annually. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the new terminal in March, and operations began in July. Recently, the airport recorded its highest flight movements, with 102 arrivals and 102 departures in a single day.
As per official data, the airport handles an average of 15,200 international passengers and approximately 8.23 lakh domestic passengers per month. The figures are based on records from January to October 2024.
Murlidhar Mohol, Minister of State for Cooperation and Aviation, stated in a post on X on Monday, “Starting tomorrow, Tuesday, December 24, 2024, all international flights from Pune International Airport will operate from the newly inaugurated terminal. All necessary technical procedures have been completed. Today I conducted a review of the arrangements with the Airport officials. This marks a significant step in enhancing the travel experience for passengers.”
Dhoke further clarified that adequate space is available in the new terminal, and technical issues that were previously obstacles have now been resolved. “All traffic and operations will be moved to the second terminal,” he said.
Currently, the Pune airport operates five international flights across three routes: Singapore, Bangkok, and Dubai. IndiGo provides flights to both Dubai and Bangkok, while SpiceJet also serves Dubai. Air India (formerly Vistara) operates flights to Singapore, and Air India Express (AIX) offers flights to Bangkok.
