South Indian actor Akshara Gowda Bikki welcomed her first child a few months ago, and in a recent conversation with HT Lifestyle, spilled the beans on her pregnancy journey, including her diet, fitness and the secret to get rid of stretch marks. “My skin during pregnancy was beautiful. I did not have any acne. For stretch marks, I did apply lots of creams, and I don’t have any stretch marks. But for people who cannot afford them, I will tell you a basic hack that one of my friends suggested,” she revealed.
“Just mix rose water and glycerin and start applying it on your belly and continue to apply till you get into that pre-pregnancy weight because your skin is still shrinking’. For at least three months post-delivery, you have to apply the same process,” she told the publication.
Dr Mikki Singh, Founder & Medical Director of Bodycraft Clinics, Bangalore and Gurgaon, said that glycerin acts like a sponge, drawing moisture into the skin and slowing down water evaporation. This helps keep the skin hydrated and gives it a healthy glow, so in skincare, it helps keep the skin hydrated and prevent the onset of stretch marks. However, it will not reduce the appearance of stretch marks that have already appeared.
Dr Shareefa Chause, Dermatologist, Dr Shareefa Skin Care Clinic, Mumbai explained that stretch marks are a type of scar that forms when the middle layer of the skin tears because of too much stretching during pregnancy, weight gain, or growth spurts. “Many believe that home remedies like rose water and glycerin can help get rid of stretch marks. Even though these DIYs are popular there are no guaranteed results or scientific evidence to prove they can reduce the concerning appearance of stretch marks,” said the doctor.

What can you do to get rid of them?
Dr Singh suggested a couple professional treatments to tackle this condition:
Laser Therapy: Stimulates collagen and elastin production to improve skin texture.
Micro-Needling: Tiny needles stimulate the skin’s natural repair process.
Chemical Peels: Exfoliates the skin, improving texture and tone.
Radiofrequency Therapy: Promotes collagen production and tightens skin.
“It’s important to remember that everyone’s skin heals differently, and the best course of action is to consult an expert and follow the guidelines for optimum results. The expert will examine the skin type and suggest which type of treatment is suited for the women,” said Dr Chause.
