Defending champion Northeast United FC rode on its Moroccan forward Alaaeddine Ajaraie’s hat-trick to beat Malaysian Armed Forces 3-1 in a Group-E match and begin its campaign in style in the Durand Cup at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium in Shillong on Saturday.

Ajaraie first capitalised on a through ball after receiving it on top of the box. Then he finished off a well-coordinated move to put NUFC 2-0 up at the break.

Following some missed chances, Ajaraie completed his hat-trick with a brilliant diagonal shot.

Amir pulled one back for MAF, which suffered its second loss.

Tribhuvan Army FC and debutant 1 Ladakh FC played out a 1-1 draw in a hard-fought Group-C encounter at the JRD Tata Sports Complex Stadium in Jamshedpur.
