A visit to the police station by three men to get an FIR filed against a suspected thief ended up in the arrest of the trio after the man, whom they had allegedly thrashed earlier in the day, died of his injuries.
The incident took place in Ghuma area on the outskirts of Ahmedabad on Friday.
The three accused included the owner of a metal fabrication shop who had accused the victim of stealing pipes from outside his premises, police said.
Bopal police booked Ketan, Kandarp and Subhash for the murder of Indravadan Parmar and arrested them.
Inspector BT Gohil of Bopal police station said it was alleged that Parmar was in the habit of consuming liquor and stealing parts of metal pipes lying outside the shop. When Parmar allegedly continued the theft for three days in a row, the accused made a plan to nab him red-handed, instead of informing the police about the thefts, said inspector B T Gohil.
On Friday, when Parmar allegedly picked up a pipe from the shop at midday, the three men chased him during which the victim fell on the ground.
“The accused thrashed Parmar severely and arrived at Bopal police station at 6.15 pm to file a case of theft against him. But when we saw Parmar’s condition, we rushed him to the Community Health Centre (CHC) in Sanand where the doctor on duty declared him dead,” said the officer.
