Due to cloudy skies in Bengaluru, the minimum temperature has significantly increased compared to the average for January in the past few days. As a result, the city is expected to experience warmer weather during the Makar Sankranti festival, which is scheduled for Tuesday, January 14.
In the past two days, starting from Saturday, Bengaluru has experienced a significant rise in minimum temperatures compared to the normal January average of 15.8 degrees Celsius. On Sunday, the minimum temperature reached 20 degrees Celsius, which is over four degrees Celsius above the typical levels for this time of year.
The India Meterological Department (IMD) has predicted a “partly cloudy sky” over the next 48 hours. “Mist is likely to occur during early morning hours in some areas. Maximum and minimum temperatures are very likely to be around 30 and 19 degrees Celsius, respectively,” the IMD said in its prediction for the next 48 hours in Bengaluru on Monday morning.
The IMD has reported a “cyclonic circulation over the east coast of Sri Lanka and the adjacent southwest Bay of Bengal,” which is leading to cloudy conditions in the region. Additionally, the temperature forecast indicates a rise in minimum temperatures above normal for much of Karnataka.
Very light rain has been predicted for Makar Sankranti day on January 14 in Bengaluru and parts of southern Karnataka. Temperatures in Bengaluru typically start to rise around the Sankranti festival. The lowest temperature recorded in the past 24 hours was 17.6 degrees Celsius at Ramamurthy Nagar in the Mahadevapura zone of Bengaluru.
Bengaluru experienced cold weather during the first week of January as a cold wave affected northern India and brought chilly winds to the south. On January 3 and 4, the minimum temperatures dropped to 12 degrees Celsius, and in some of the more open areas of the city, night temperatures fell below 12 degrees Celsius.
The lowest minimum temperature ever recorded in Bengaluru is 7.8 degrees Celsius, which occurred on January 13, 1884, according to the historical records of the IMD. In the past 15 years, the lowest temperatures in January were 12 degrees Celsius on January 16, 2012, and 12.3 degrees Celsius on January 15, 2019.
Extreme cold wave conditions in north India caused severe cold conditions in parts of north Karnataka and cold weather in south Karnataka from December 15 to 20. Bengaluru recorded a minimum temperature of 12.4 degrees Celsius on December 16, which was lower than the previous decade’s lowest minimum temperature of 12.8 degrees Celsius recorded on December 24, 2011.
