Newcastle’s last major domestic trophy had come 70 years ago, when they lifted the FA Cup in 1955.
Prior to his side’s 2023 Carabao Cup final defeat to Manchester United, boss Eddie Howe attempted a novel motivational tactic.
The Toon manager was said to have introduced a picture of the message “we have not won a trophy for 67 years” to greet players arriving for training.
An image of the message subsequently circulated on social media.
In the aftermath of today’s 2-1 victory over Liverpool, Newcastle reposted the image… albeit with one amendment.
The club’s social media team edited the image to instead read: “We have not won a trophy in 0 years.”
Jubiliant Newcastle supporters loved the post.
One responded on X: “Nah fairs admin cooked here.”

While a second wrote: “Man I love you so much, this picture has haunted me for 3 years.”
A third joked: “Nah New castle admins waited for 68 years to post this.”
And another added: “Damn that was quick.”
After the match, Howe admitted that Newcastle were well aware of the club’s drought.
He told Sky Sports: “We were well aware of the history and we wanted to do the club proud. We wanted to score, we wanted to perform and we wanted to win.
“We are breaking new ground, I thought we were magnificent today.
“We worked consistently for two weeks on set plays just for this game and if you had seen us in practice you would have said we haad no chance.
“We couldn’t believe Dan Burn scored – he didn’t train like that! He was a colossus for us.”
