Nita Ambani and Mukesh Ambani’s love story reads like a modern-day fairy tale, complete with destiny, family values, and an unforgettable proposal. Their journey wasn’t just about wealth or legacy—it was about fate bringing two people together in the most unexpected way. Before becoming one of India’s most influential power couples, their paths crossed by chance, leading to a whirlwind romance that culminated in one of the country’s most extravagant weddings.

“It wasn’t a conventional proposal,” Mukesh Ambani once admitted. “Not something you’d expect from the son of India’s richest industrialist.” Instead of grand gestures or elaborate setups, he chose a bold yet deeply heartfelt approach—one that perfectly captured the essence of their love.

Beginning: Dance and Destiny

It was in 1984 when Kokilaben Ambani and Dhirubhai Ambani noticed the graceful bharatanatyam dancer. Impressed by the grace and talent of Nita, they thought she would make a good life partner for their eldest son. Thereafter, a meeting was arranged with Mukesh; so began their love story.

They spent the first few days talking endlessly, with Mukesh proving immediately attracted to Nita’s mind, confidence, and all-around staggered simplicity. They connected on ideals, ambitions, and everything else and bonded deeper and deeper as months rolled into years.

Traffic Signal Proposal: Mukesh Ambani’s Brave Move

After barely three weeks of courtship, Mukesh Ambani proposed to Nita in a totally outlandish way. While driving on Pedder Road, Mumbai, he suddenly stopped the car at a traffic signal and turned to Nita. With unwavering confidence, he told her that they wouldn’t move forward until she gave him an answer.

In their desperate situation, Nita replied with a clear “yes” to Mukesh, sealing their love story right in the middle of a busy Mumbai street when cars started honking behind them.

The Great Wedding of Nita and Mukesh Ambani

On March 8, 1985, Nita married Mukesh in a grand ceremony that was steeped in tradition and modernity. Nita’s wedding dress is better reflected in Gujarati culture, where she donned two sarees:

  • A Panetar saree, a white or ivory silk saree with a red border- a symbol of blessings from her maternal family.
  • A Gharchola, specifically a red and gold saree, was given to her by the groom’s family as their symbol of welcoming her into the house.
  • Tiny bangles, kadas, haath phool, half-moon mang tika, and most traditional nath complete her bridal look.
  • The make-up is of peer bindis, feathered brows, and exceptionally minimal eye makeup, with a perfectly stylish hairdo-head-in-a-bun center parting.

The Couple has Completed 40 Years Together

Now, after 40 years of marriage, Nita and Mukesh Ambani have established both a family and an empire. As chairperson to the Reliance Foundation, Nita has also made significant strides in charitable activities concerning education and sports development in India. The story that started at a busy Mumbai traffic signal has now become the foundation for an empire and a family.
