A basement that plays both sides

Such was the case with a newly finished basement for a Markham family of five the first time around. Beyond a few visual missteps, the space simply didn’t support the rhythm of a busy young family. It felt fragmented and inefficient, with a layout that lacked cohesion and a sense of purpose. With three children under five, including a set of energetic twins, the homeowners hoped a second makeover would unlock the basement’s full potential. They envisioned a warm, welcoming space that could evolve with their growing family, support everyday play and connection, and still feel refined enough for entertaining friends and extended family. They turned to designer Dorothy Tsui to reimagine the lower level and bring their vision to life.
