A new player emerged on Punjab’s political scene Tuesday as some radical leaders floated the Akali Dal (Waris Punjab De) that will led by jailed Khadoor Sahib MP Amritpal Singh.
A statement attributed to Amritpal, that was read out at the launch rally, said the formation of the outfit is “the first step towards the resurgence of Akali politics”.
Amritpal, booked under under the stringent National Security Act (NSA), is lodged in the Central Jail at Dibrugarh in Assam. His father, Tarsem Singh, was present when the party’s name was announced. Faridkot MP Sarabjit Singh Khalsa, son of one of the assassins of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, was also present on the stage.
Multiple photographs of deceased persons were put up: slain militant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, who led the Khalistan movement; his aide Amreek Singh; murdered human rights activist Jaswant Singh Khalra, and Waris Punjab De founder Sandeep Singh, alias Deep Sidhu.
While announcing the outfit, a 15-point resolution was also passed. According to the resolution, Amritpal has been appointed as ‘mukh sewadar’ of the newly floated outfit.
