Changing City: With 78% work done, Metro Line 2B on track to completion | Mumbai News

Metro Line 2B, a part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority’s (MMRDA’s) ambitious plan to enhance the city’s Metro connectivity, is poised to become one of Mumbai’s most important metro lines upon completion. Designed to ease traffic congestion and improve connectivity to growing suburban areas, Line 2B will connect D N Nagar in Andheri to Mandale in Mankhurd to become an important connector between the eastern and western suburbs, linking areas like Andheri, Bandra, Chembur and Mankhurd. Once open, Line 2B is expected to draw the highest ridership of over 10 lakh daily.

Alignment: D N Nagar-Mandale

Seventy-eight per cent of the civil work on the 23.6 km line is complete.

Completion deadline: Project is progressing and is proposed to be completed phase-wise from mid-2026 to 2027 end

Car shed location: Mandale. Ninety-seven per cent of depot construction is complete.

Stations: The line will have 20 elevated stations – ESIC Nagar, Prem Nagar, Indira Nagar, Nanavati Hospital, Khira Nagar, Saraswati Nagar, National College, Bandra Metro, Income Tax Office, ILFS, MTNL, SG Barve Marg, Kurla East, EEH, Chembur, Diamond Garden, Shivaji Chowk, BSNL Metro, Mankhurd and Mandale Metro.

Challenges in implementation

Urban constraints: Addressing encroachments, rehabilitation concerns, and coordination with underground utility services.

Logistical hurdles: Navigating through heavily congested roads with traffic management issues.

Multi-agency coordination: Securing approvals and permissions from several departments and agencies to move the project forward.

Proactive planning: MMRDA has employed risk assessments, mitigation strategies, and project management best practices to tackle these challenges.

Daily ridership: 10.5 lakh

Estimated cost: Rs 10,986 crore
