Sanjay Leela Bhansali offering supporting role to a star of Govinda’s stature was offensive; wife Sunita Ahuja says she wouldn’t have been as polite as her husband | Bollywood News

Sunita Ahuja, the wife of Bollywood actor Govinda, has spoken about the challenges that her husband has faced in the industry, including the sabotage of his films and the prevalence of jealousy and groupism. According to Sunita, Govinda has been a victim of politics in the industry, with several of his films being stopped from release. “Two to three of his films were stopped from being released. There’s politics everywhere. Where is it not prevalent? There is politics in every field. There is no other actor like Govinda, so some people will try to sabotage him. Three of his films were stopped… It is true that he is not being given a platform,” she said in an interview with Hindi Rush.

Sunita believes that the industry is plagued by jealousy, which has prevented Govinda from making a successful comeback. “Tell me which industry doesn’t have jealousy? You think anybody in this industry can see people do well? If you are into groupism then you can climb up the ladder. If you don’t belong to any group then nobody will pay attention to you in this industry. Don’t know how and why this industry has become like this. It is not good,” she lamented.

She also criticised the practice of nepotism in the industry, where opportunities are limited to those with connections. “People say that there is nepotism in this industry but there are so many (star) kids who are sitting at home. They are not given any platform. They give work to those who are in their group. Everybody should get opportunities. I say people from outside the industry, those from normal families should also get the opportunity. It’s become so boring seeing the same people do the same kind of work. Some day that group will vanish, what will you do then? How long will you keep seeing the same faces? There are new faces, new kids, give them new opportunities,” she said.

Sunita attributed Govinda’s lack of involvement in Bollywood circles to his individualistic nature and how it didn’t work in his favour. “He is an individual, he is a village boy, he wouldn’t join any of those groups. He makes his own group and mingles with them. Woh nahi jaayega kisiki gulaami karne (He won’t bow down to anyone), he is in his own world, hero number 1 in his head,” she said.

While Govinda has had his set of challenges in his career as an actor, he had previously opened up letting go some good opportunituies that came his way, for example, Sanjay leela Bhansali’s Devdas. When asked about Govinda’s decision not to take up the role of Chunnilal in the Shah Rukh Khan starrer, Sunita said, “Why would he play Chunnilal? He was a very big star. Why would he play a second lead? It’s his choice. You can’t offer Chunnilal’s role to Govinda. He didn’t do it, it’s his choice. I am glad he didn’t do it. Why would be accept such a role being a top star? He was a top star during the 80s, 90s, and 2000s. Why would you offer a role like that to him. He handled it very well; I wouldn’t have been as kind.” The role ultimately went to Jackie Shroff.
