The travel trend is popular on social media, with passengers sharing their experiences of travelling to European destinations from Liverpool John Lennon Airport for a day out.
The trend, which extends beyond Liverpool’s airport, sees UK travellers using local airports to jet off on a day-long adventure. These exciting day trips involve tourists trying to fit in as much local culture as possible, before hopping on the plane home. And the best bit is, costs are kept low as you don’t need to book accommodation – so the real skill comes with sourcing the right times for flights to maximise your time.
A fast-growing community of explorers have taken to Facebook to share their experiences on groups where they swap tips and post recommendations for day-long city breaks from Liverpool Airport.
We took a look at some of the destinations you could book an ‘extreme day trip’ to from Liverpool Airport, based on current flight timetables. All flights were based on passengers travelling in the week commencing Monday, March 3. We only included direct flights where it was possible to arrive in the destination city, take in some local sites and make it back to the airport for the return leg within a single day.
Amsterdam
The flight time from Liverpool to Amsterdam is just an hour and 15 minutes, making it an ideal destination for a quick turnaround which leaves you with enough time to get to and from some of the main attractions. From immersing yourself in the cobbled and characterful streets to soaking up the scenic sites on two wheels, you can travel to the charming Dutch capital from Liverpool John Lennon Airport with easyJet.
Flying on a Monday, passengers could leave Liverpool at 7:10am and land in Amsterdam at 9:30am. The return flight departs at 6:35pm and lands at 6:55pm, coming in at £100 per passenger.
Dublin
For £53, travellers can take a round-trip to Dublin, leaving Liverpool Airport at 7:30am and landing in the Republic of Ireland’s capital city by 8:25am. Flying back at 7:05pm, passengers would touch down back at Liverpool John Lennon Airport by 8pm. These flights could be booked with Ryanair for a Monday day trip.
Belfast
Belfast is renowned for its rich history and fascinating culture, as well as its bustling nightlife – not that extreme day trippers would be able to make the most of this aspect of the popular city break. But with a flight time of under an hour, you can really maximise your time in the city with this trip.
Flying with easyJet, passengers can leave Liverpool at 7:30am and land in Belfast at 8:20am. Heading home, the flight which offers travellers the most time on their trip would be the 9:05pm option, which lands at 9:55pm. This would cost just £40.
