Beck says it’s the best thing he has ever done
A dad who was told he had a serious health condition changed his life after seeing a Facebook advert. Beck Phillips, 32, weighed almost 23st when he was told he had high cholesterol and if he didn’t lose weight he would have to take medication for the rest of his life.
At the time, the dad, who suffered from anxiety before making a major change to his lifestyle, had seen the same advert for Man vs Fat pop up multiple times and decided “enough was enough“ and it was time to give it ago. Since joining, he has lost 4st and transformed his life.
Beck, from Widnes, told the ECHO: “It started last December [2023], I had been to see my GP because I had been suffering with anxiety and they told me I needed to have some tests done. When I went they told me I had high cholesterol and put me on medication.

“I asked my GP if there was anything I could do to get off the meds and they said that I needed to lose weight, which was the final signal I needed to make me change.
“I started the year with the mindset everyone does, new year, new me, except this time I kept with it because I didn’t want to be the person that I was anymore. So in January I started watching my food, watching what I was eating, being more conscious, doing circuits at the gym, all to lose weight.
“It was going fine, no issues or anything, but I had been getting ads for Man vs Fat for a while. Another one happened to pop up and I was seeing a therapist for my anxiety at the time and they convinced me to take the plunge so I signed up to the waiting list. I’d always wanted to get back into playing football and within a few minutes before I knew it they had emailed me back and said I was in.”
Since joining, Beck has had a 20% weight loss but most importantly has transformed his life for his son, Beck Phillips, four. The dad said: “I’m very proud of myself. I can now run three 5Ks a week, play football every week and everything together combined makes me much healthier.
“My son is only four and now it means I can do so much more with him and as a family. It’s the little things that make a huge difference in life now.
“For example, last week I had to check under my mum’s car and back when I was 22st a press up would have been daunting but now at 17st I can get down and I’m flexible, I can do things again and it’s great. If my son is tired when we’re out as a family I can carry him, I can do better. It’s had such a knock on effect, it has been really good for me.”
