It’s clear that Manchester United want a new striker this summer, but exactly which player they sign remains to be seen. All the signs, though, indicate RB Leipzig star, Benjamin Sesko, is the player identified by United to strengthen the forward line before the September 1 deadline.

United are advancing on a deal for Sesko, who would provide competition for Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund if no outgoings are completed. Newcastle are also in the running to sign Sesko, with a battle now set to take place for the Slovenia international’s signature.

If United were to sign Sesko, then it would be with the expectation that the striker would start in a central role in Ruben Amorim’s system. Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo are also expected to be nailed-on starters for United going forward – and so could form a new attacking trio for the season ahead.

If Sesko was to sign, it could be that one of United’s other existing names also plays an important role in the striker being a success at Old Trafford. And that’s as an alternative option for those two No.10s.

Mason Mount may well be the perfect player to perform in the system and help Sesko. The playmaker arrived in a £60million deal from Chelsea in 2023, but has struggled to maintain with injuries ever since moving to Old Trafford.

What could help Mount going forward is playing in his favoured No.10 position, when game-time allows, which would in turn also help Sesko. The Slovenia international, 22, would need regular service from across the side, including whoever plays in their attacking midfield roles – and would also need other players help make room for him to run in behind opposition defences.

Could Mount be that player? The England international has shown a few glimpses of why United paid Chelsea £60millon to bring him to the club, notably in last season’s win over Lyon in the Europa League.

United will now be hoping that form can continue for an extended period of time in the Premier League. If that happens, and Sesko does sign for United, it could be the start of an important partnership going forward – if the former Chelsea man can get past Mbeumo and Cunha in the pecking order next season.
