The road is expected to remain closed for some time
Four people have been taken to hospital following “disorder” in a city centre. Emergency services were called to Commercial Road, Newport, at around 3.20pm on Friday, August 1.
Gwent Police said four people were injured in the incident, with two people currently “in custody” in connection with the incident.
Commercial Road is closed in both directions between Albert Street and Frederick Square. A large police presence remains at the scene, and the road is expected to remain closed for some time.
Gwent Police are advising drivers to avoid the area and find alternative routes.
The injuries to the four people taken to hospital are not believed to be life-threatening or life-changing, the force said.
In a statement, Gwent Police said: “We’re investigating reports of violent disorder on Friday 1 August, after officers were called to Commercial Road, Newport, at around 3.20pm.
“Two men are currently in custody in connection while four people are attending hospital for treatment.
“None of their injuries sustained by those involved in the disorder are believed to be life-threatening or life-changing.
“Commercial Road is currently closed between Albert Street and Frederick Street as enquiries continue.”

In a post on X, Gwent Police said: “Commercial Road, Newport is currently closed between Albert Street and Frederick Street.
