The PlayStation 5 recently got a price hike in the UK making it more difficult than ever to access the hobby of console gaming. However, a current deal at Amazon has seen the console drop a huge 21% in price, going down to £339.95 instead of the usual £429.99.

It’s just in time for Sony to release its next biggest game later this year with Ghost of Yotei set to launch in October. It’s a sequel to Ghost of Tsushima, which launched on the PlayStation 4, but this new title is coming only to PS5 – that means if you don’t own one yet and want to play the upcoming game, now is the time to jump on the deal.

Even if Ghost of Yotei doesn’t sound like your bag, there are plenty of other titles already released on the console that make it worth buying. One of my personal favourites is Astro Bot, which takes inspiration from the 3D Mario games and provides an incredible platforming collectathon experience that’s also a celebration of PlayStation’s storied history.

For those into action games with a focus on story, there’s Spider-Man 2 or God of War Ragnarok. The latter title launched on PS4 too, but it gains some significant performance and visual upgrades on the more powerful hardware.

It’s worth noting that this PS5 on sale at Amazon is the digital edition, which doesn’t have a disc drive. This means gamers won’t be able to play pre-owned games on it and will be limited to buying games digitally from the PlayStation Store.

There are two other major consoles to consider buying in 2025, with one of them being the Nintendo Switch 2 that launched in June. It’s just had its second major game launch with Donkey Kong Bananza and is available from £395.99.

The alternative option is an Xbox Series X, which has enticing deals such as Xbox Game Pass to grant access to a huge library of games for a small fee each month. You can grab one for £483.50 at Amazon.

Reviews of the PlayStation 5 sit at 4.7 stars from Amazon customers. “Saved up for a while and was NOT disappointed! So quick to download, great graphics and good build quality, upgrading from my old PS4 was a breeze and transferred over so quick, the games with a ps5 version downloaded that instead without me doing anything! So so happy,” writes one shopper.

Another adds: “The console itself just like the controller is sleek and a nice refreshing contrast to the PS4. I do enjoy using the PS5 and without a disc or ‘pro’ label it is great value for money.” Meanwhile, a third shopper said: “Glad I bought the digital version. No more of the noisy fan.”

However, some customers did regret going for the digital edition instead of one that takes discs: “I love my PS5, however don’t buy a digital version that limits your choice of media. The cost of games on the PS Store are a rip off. You can get used physical media PS5 games for a lot less and you always have the choice of selling or exchanging for another game.”

Another gamer found that their controller was exhibiting stick drift after a few months: “Console is great, controller not so much. After 3 to 4 months I can’t play anything because of the crap controllers Sony is making now, way too much stick drift.”
