Fresh bedding is a crucial part of making your bedroom feel appealing and like somewhere that you want to go to sleep. A mattress protector might not make up part of your visible bed spread but it is just as important to a good night’s rest.

Many people rely on protectors to save their mattress from wear over time. Having an extra layer of protection between your mattress and sheet can prevent stains and keep your mattress fresh for longer than it otherwise would be.

While selecting the best duvet covers or pillowcases might be a matter of personal style, a mattress protector will mostly be hidden from view. With this in mind it’s worth questioning how much money it is necessary to spend to find a good one and what benefits you are looking for.

Seeking to a put a cheaper option to the test I went to Lidl’s famous middle aisle to buy the Slumberdown Anti-Allergy Mattress Topper on sale for a very reasonable £6.99 for a double.

Considering that Primark’s equivalent size mattress protector is £6.50 I was happy with this.

For comparison, the same double mattress topper in Argos is £16.

The mattress topper was also available in a single size for £4.99 and a king size for £7.99.

The next stage of my review was positive too and I was pleasantly surprised to learn the mattress cover fit like a dream on my double bed. It went entirely round the sides of the bed fitting as opposed to just covering the top and being held in place with elastic straps as my old one did. The material itself was soft and seemed breathable too.

While I don’t think I will personally notice the anti allergy effects, as I am not a sufferer, it was a nice feeling to know I would be warding off dust mites and other allergens from my bed. If you are prone to allergies or live with pets it could be worthwhile considering and the product has even been endorsed by Allergy UK.

What I didn’t realise until I looked into the product further was that anti-allergy bedding will be labelled specifically as anti-allergy or anti-bacterial usually because it contains chemicals that ward off dust mites or bacteria.

In the case of this mattress protector the chemical is dimethyloctadecyl ammonium chloride. I have to admit the thought of chemicals underneath where I sleep was more off putting then dust mites, however many studies point to it being safe in the concentrations found in bedding.

In terms of washing, the synthetic fibres should be washed at a maximum of 40C and should not be tumble dried.

Overall, the mattress topper was an absolute steal and Lidl’s Middle Aisle certainly didn’t disappoint on value. I’ve also boosted my knowledge of anti allergy products and now know what to look out for when my hay fever riddled friends come to stay.

Allergies aside, it’s a soft and protective cover which I’m sure will keep my mattress fresh for a good while. Whether the chemicals are a necessary addition to your bedroom are worth considering based on your own sensitivity to dust and other allergens but are probably not for me.
