Samit Patel played his last match for Derbyshire when he captained the Falcons in their final T20 Blast group game against Birmingham Bears on Friday.
The 40-year-old former England all-rounder was in the final months of his contract at the County Ground, but is now leaving before the start of the 50-over One-Day Cup competition.
The game ended in defeat as the Bears piled up 233-5 and Derbyshire were bowled out for just 106 in reply, with Patel caught for five.
Patel, who joined the club from East Midlands rivals Nottinghamshire in 2024 on a two-year deal, said his next role had yet to be decided, but he would like to stay with Derbyshire in a coaching capacity.
“Who knows? It could be my last game ever in domestic cricket, it may not be,” he told BBC Radio Derby.
“I’ve given it a whole crack for two years and it’s been pretty disappointing that we’ve not got to a quarter-final or Finals Day.”
He added: “Hopefully things don’t just stop there, hopefully I can do a role at the club going forward in white-ball cricket.
“The knowledge I have, I’ve played over 430 T20s, I’ve got a lot to give especially with the younger guys in the squad.”
