Hikers were being warned this week to stay away from the area around the  mountain known as Skarfjellet in Sunndal, located in the eastern portion of Møre og Romsdal County. It’s been the site of some major landslides, remains unstable and could crash down on the trail that runs under it.

NVE, the state agency in charge of monitoring waterways and energy resources, wasn’t expecting any major consequences from a slide since there are no roads, major infrastructure or communities in the immediate area. It received a message of concern, however, from local officials and set up radar surveillance of the mountainside, as it has in many other areas of Norway.

Satellite data over the past few years has shown significant movement along Skarfjellet’s northwest side of up to 20 millimeters a year. The most recent radar data shows movement of up to one centimeter per hour. “We are urging people to follow new signs from the municipality and stay away from the affected area,” said acting NVE section chief Kjetil Indrevær.
