‘Ultra’ race from Oslo to Bergen underway

Nearly 200 ultra-sporty athletes from around the world are running from Oslo to Bergen this week. They left Oslo Thursday morning and are due to be arriving in Bergen nine days later.

The race that makes a marathon look easy demands that participants run the 515-kilometer Oslo Bergen Trail in a maximum 224 hours. All runners are also required to carry a backpack with food, drinks, clothing, a sleeping bag and other equipment. It’s up to themselves when or whether they choose to eat or sleep, and how many breaks they take.

The mountainous terrain and fjords pose various challenges along the way, but some runners return again and again in attempts to improve their times. There are eight check-points along the route, which follows trails marked by the national trekking association DNT and involves elevation changes of around 18,000 meters.
