A man who allegedly shot at police has been arrested after heavily armed officers swarmed a home in Melbourne’s west.

Police urged residents at Leon Drive, Weir Views, to stay in their homes after 4.30pm today as they negotiated with “an armed male” in a stranger’s home.

“The man fired shots at police before entering the house in Weir Views. No one was injured,” police alleged.

“The area surrounding has been cordoned off while the incident is underway. We will provide further information when it is available.”

Later in the night, police shared more details of the incident.

It began about 3.40pm when police in Melton spotted a vehicle that had allegedly been carjacked earlier in the day from Snake Gully.

The Air Wing tracked it to Leon Drive, where the man got out and allegedly fired at police before running into a stranger’s home, sparking the siege.

Heavily armed police were seen scaling rooftops and flooding nearby streets and backyards.

Just before 6pm, police swarmed what appeared to be the house of interest and removed a toddler and a man, who were not injured.

After the stranger allegedly fired at officers again, a police dog was sent to help officers arrest him just after 6pm.

He was seen shirtless and handcuffed outside the front of the home while he was treated by paramedics just before 6.30pm.

The man was taken to hospital under police guard for treatment for a dog bite.

No charges have been laid.

A cordon remained in place after 8pm as police investigated the crime scene.

They said there was no ongoing threat to the public.

Weir Views is about 35 kilometres west of Melbourne CBD.
