Manchester United have reignited their interest in signing Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen, according to reports.

With Andre Onana’s long-term future uncertain, Ruben Amorim has been scouting the ‘keeper market for a potential replacement, and Ter Stegen has reportedly emerged as a leading candidate. Reports have suggested that Ter Stegen doesn’t feature in Hansi Flick’s plans at Barcelona, and he could therefore be allowed to leave the Camp Nou.

According to TEAMtalk, United are keen on bringing the experienced 32-year-old to Old Trafford as part of a major goalkeeping reshuffle. It’s added that senior United figures are torn on whether to axe Onana, who has been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, this summer, after he made a number of mistakes during the 2024/25 season.

United are said to be exploring several goalkeeper alternatives as part of ‘broader’ planning, and it is claimed Ter Stegen is right at the top of their shopping list. While no offer has been lodged yet, United have confirmed in internal talks that Ter Stegen could become a serious target if United decide to bring in another goalkeeper in the window, the report adds.

Chelsea are also said to have ‘gathered information’ on Ter Stegen, but the Blues look to be progressing in a £15m deal for AC Milan shot-stopper Mike Maignan. The 28-year-old was awarded as the Player of the Match after making six saves during France’s 2-0 win against Germany on Sunday and is now set to move to Stamford Bridge.

Ter Stegen, meanwhile, has endured a difficult season at Barcelona. He ruptured his patella tendon in September and that limited him to just nine first-team appearances. Wojciech Szczesny came out of retirement and was signed as his replacement and he ended up taking his No.1 spot for the remainder of the campaign.

Now, Barcelona want to sign Joao Garcia from Espanyol in a £21m deal and that is set to drop Ter Stegen down to third-choice and all-but end his career there. Ter Stegen is said to be furious with how Barcelona have handled his future and is now ‘ready to go to war’ with the Catalan club, according to Spanish outlet Sport.

Ter Stegen is reported to be shocked by the situation and ‘deeply hurt’, believing the development is a ‘direct attack’ on his ‘professional character’. Barcelona sporting director Deco is set to explain the club’s stance to Ter Stegen and his camp in the near future, as the club want a resolution for the parties involved.

However, Ter Stegen has accused Barcelona of leaking information to damage his reputation in an attempt to pressure him to leave the club, ending his 11-year stint in Spain.
