The pair finished second in the first section of the race, although along the way they had a few hurdles including Fin’s health
A young Welsh couple from Carmarthen have already made their mark on Race Across the World fans after the first episode of the new season. Fin and Sioned, who were 18 and 19 at the time of recording, opened up on camera about their relationship and Fin’s health battle.
In the first episode of season 5 of the travel competition, the pair finished second in the first section of the race. Along the way they had a few hurdles, however, and these included Fin’s sugar levels dropping as he suffers with type one diabetes.
The childhood sweethearts opened up about Fin’s health as they travelled through China racing to the first check point of the competition. For the latest TV and showbiz gossip sign up to our newsletter
The pair have swapped their small-town Welsh life for a 14,000km adventure across Asia. They started on The Great Wall of China as they race the other four teams across China, Nepal and India, before ending in Kanniyakumari, which is the southernmost tip of India.
Despite initially making a lead they hit a curve ball when Fin’s sugar levels started to decrease. He then opened up about his struggle with diabetes, as the pair had to stop for him to have some fast acting sugar.
Fin said: “I was diagnosed with type one diabetes when I was 11 years old. The exercise will bring down my levels.”
He also shared that in the beginning of their relationship he attempted to hide his condition from his girlfriend.
He explained: “I used to be very, I guess, insecure. I thought it was embarrassing. I remember the day you found my sensor.”
Sioned replied: “How did you actually feel when I found it? Were you like, ‘Oh shit, she’s found it’?”
Fin said he was both gutted and embarrassed when she found out and that he would have carried on hiding his condition for longer if he could.
Sioned then explained that she worried about his sugar levels often more than he did, that she took on the motherly role especially when his mum was not around.
He added: “It’s going to be a challenge doing the race,” especially with his diabetes.
To which Sioned reassured him saying, “It’s making sure we plan ahead, I think. I literally inject you now.”
Fin joked: “Yeah to be fair, you’ve injected me in my bottom. Many times.”
Fans of the show have shared on social media that they “love Fin and Sioned already.”
One social media user on X said: “Fin and Sioned are the literally the cutest”
Another fan of the pair shared adorable screenshots of the pair during the first episode of the race, saying: “These two. Fin & Sioned. Bless them. Oh to be young again.”
Fin and Sioned will appear on Race Across the World on BBC One and BBC iPlayer every Wednesday at 9pm.
