Escape to the Country couple gobsmacked as BBC show throws them brutal ‘wake up call’

A couple who appeared on BBC’s Escape to the Country were left shocked after they realised the huge prices that awaited them, despite having a healthy budget of £650,000

A couple featured on BBC’s Escape to the Country were taken by surprise when they encountered the steep property prices in their desired location.

In the episode aired on Wednesday (April 23), host Nicki Chapman guided Tim and Liza, a married couple aiming to relocate from Malaysia to Herefordshire, closer to their three sons and grandchild. With a substantial budget of £650,000, they were in search of an ideal detached home with a minimum of three bedrooms.

The house hunt began on a high note, but the reality of pricing soon hit the pair.

The first property boasted a roomy interior and breathtaking countryside views, although Tim noted their preference for a more modern aesthetic.

Nevertheless, the couple’s spirits remained high as they explored further, reports the Express.

However, when it came time to guess the price, both Liza and Tim were astounded to learn that the property matched their maximum budget exactly.

Post-viewing, Tim admitted: “The garden is lovely and the views are to die for. They’re beautiful views.

“We completely underestimated the price. A bit of a wake up for us, I guess. We hadn’t thought that so far out in the countryside that the prices would be so high.”

Nicki had cautioned them beforehand about the current boom in the UK housing market and the soaring prices.

Upon reflection, Tim and Liza realised that the house wasn’t quite right for them, with Liza admitting it was too cramped.

Their mood improved during the episode as they explored the second property, which boasted a more modern touch compared to the first.

Liza even went so far as to call this home her “dream” house, making for an optimistic turn in their search.

However, at the conclusion of the programme, despite their interest in revisiting the second house, Tim and Liza chose a different path.

As the episode wrapped up, Nicki disclosed: “In the end, Tim and Liza decided not to go for any of the homes we showed them. Instead, they found a house in Worcester that fitted all of their needs.”

Escape to the Country airs weekdays at 3pm on BBC One
