The ‘Garden of Resilience’ is taking root at the Kitchener-Waterloo Art Gallery (KWAG), transforming its Sculpture Garden into a vibrant space where art, community, and sustainability intersect. Launched as a response to rising food insecurity and ecological concerns, this initiative invites locals to cultivate organic fruits, vegetables, herbs, and flowers, all while reimagining what an art gallery can be.
Half of the garden’s annual harvest will be donated to mutual aid programs, directly supporting community members in need. With food bank usage in the region spiking 25% year over year, the timing couldn’t be more urgent.
The project is an active exhibit, educational hub, and living model of decolonized land use. It will host public programs, seasonal activations, and a Gardener-in-Residence to engage artists in eco-conscious creativity.
Set to launch on May 24 officially, the Garden of Resilience underscores KWAG’s evolving role as a cultural and community cornerstone.
