Queen Sonja released from hospital

Norway’s Queen Sonja had another medical emergency this week, but now seems to be on the mend. The Royal Palace announced on Tuesday that she was released from the national hospital in Oslo (Rikshospitalet) after suffering shortness of breath.

The palace had announced on Monday that the queen, who took part as usual in a state visit from Iceland just before the Easter holidays, developed breathing problems while on holiday herself at the royal family’s mountain cabin in Sikkilsdalen. She and King Harald had been spending Easter there but she wound up being flown by air ambulance to Oslo.

Queen Sonja, age 88, suffered a similar problem in January after skiing in Lillehammer, which resulted in her getting a pacemaker. She required only an overnight stay at the hospital in Oslo this time as well, after examinations “show that the situation has normalized,” reported the palace.

The queen will be on sick leave through the end of this week but is back on the royal program from next Tuesday, when she’ll attend a reception at the palace for those receiving royal decorations. She’s also due to co-host a luncheon with the king next Wednesday for the president of Croatia and his wife.
