Jake Paul has tended to thrive off controversy during his career after making the switch from YouTube to boxing. From his personal rivalry with Tyson Fury’s brother Tommy, to his upcoming bout in November against the veteran Mike Tyson, Paul is not one to shy away from the limelight.

Paul has also made clear his admiration for Mohamed Salah and Liverpool. In April 2021, Paul chose to pledge his support for the Reds during their hugely significant title race clash with Manchester City.

Since then, Paul has tweeted semi-regularly in favour of Liverpool much to the bemusement to many lifelong supporters of the club. So why does the former Disney child star support Arne Slot’s men? The ECHO has taken a closer look.

Salah superfan

In 2022, Paul admitted that he had been ‘getting into football more’ in recent years and declared that star man Mohamed Salah ‘is a beast’. However, his love for the Egyptian forward does not stop there.

Practically every tweet about Liverpool references Salah in some form. Last year, after the Reds missed out on Champions League qualification, the 32-year-old posted an apology to supporters to which Paul replied: “It’s okay we still love you.

“Alexa play ‘You’ll never walk alone’.” The American has also been pictured in a full Liverpool kit with Salah’s name and number printed on the back.

In America, as has been witnessed by the rise in popularity for Lionel Messi, popularity for an individual is sometimes more common than backing a team. Therefore, the fact Salah represents Liverpool could be reason for Paul’s support.

KSI theory

Another reason for Paul’s Liverpool fandom has been suggested by English YouTuber-turned-boxer KSI. The ‘Sideman’ believes that Paul’s support for Liverpool is fake and he has an ulterior motive for backing the Merseyside club.

In an interview with talkSPORT, KSI explained: “He’s a ‘Liverpool fan’, yeah.

“Basically he’s obsessed with me, he’s literally become a Liverpool fan just because I’m an Arsenal fan. He’s constantly saying: ‘Ah Liverpool are winning,’ and stuff like that like he gives a s***.

“He doesn’t care, it’s just to try and get at me.” KSI’s theory is that Paul was trying to goad him into a boxing bout which to this date has not occurred.

There is some evidence that backs this theory with Paul regularly tweeting about KSI. His tweets included offering a bet with him and his brother Logan who co-owns Prime Energy with the English YouTuber over the result of Arsenal vs Liverpool in 2022.

Why does Paul support Liverpool?

Ultimately, the exact reason is not well known. Paul has never given any of the usual reasons why he may support the Reds like family ties or links to the city.

His reasoning for supporting the club is probably somewhere between the two theories above.
