Things escalated and he allegedly strangled the woman. Realising she was dead, he quickly drove towards the Najafgarh canal. “He tied a stone to the body to ensure it sinks before dumping it in the canal,” the police officer, who is privy to the investigation, said.

The victim worked for a private firm. When she didn’t return home on the night of March 12, her family lodged a complaint at Seemapuri police station and a case was registered under sections pertaining to kidnapping.

On March 17, police said, her body was found floating in the canal near the Chhawla area of Delhi.

“Based on CCTV surveillance, Asif was arrested on Wednesday and is currently being questioned. His car has been seized,” a police officer said.
