Officials from the national park posted CCTV footage online which they said showed the three tourists on Mount Rinjani on the island of Lombok – a popular hiking trail which is closed during the rainy season due to dangerous conditions.
The three were each fined $365 and banned from the area for five years, according to national park officials.
“Mount Rinjani National Park Office handled 3 climbers from Australia who were climbing illegally on the Sembalun climbing tourist route, after previously being monitored by surveillance cameras (CCTV) installed at Plawangan Sembalun,” Park officials wrote on Instagram.
“Their activities challenged the boundaries that should be respected during the closure period of climbing tourist destinations.”
The tourists reportedly signed a letter stating they would not hike there again.
