The journalist has kept in touch with the Hollywood actor after their Chicken Shop Date episode
Chicken Shop Date star Amelia Dimoldenberg opened up about her status with actor Andrew Garfield after she “friend-zoned” him on their date.
The 31-year-old internet star is the founder and host of the hit YouTube series Chicken Shop Date, in which she interviews celebrity guests around various chicken shops in London.
She’s been on dates with various A-List celebrities including Cher, Aitch, Raye and Billie Eilish. In 2022, Amelia interviewed Hollywood actor Andrew Garfield on the carpet of the GQ Men of Year awards and again at the 2023 Golden Globes.
The chemistry between the pair went viral as fans demanded that they sit down and have an actual chicken shop date. They continuously flirted as they met with each other at star-studded events, until last year when he appeared on her dating YouTube channel.
Amelia is the cover star of the latest issue of Cosmopolitan, and she admitted to the magazine that she loved her on-screen date with Andrew. She shared: “I’m so happy to have made something that’s affected people in that way. To see videos of people renting out their office meeting rooms to watch the episode – it was one of the best things I’ve ever been a part of.
“I’m really proud of it. We’re friendly. It’s been great to speak to him about how well the episode has done. He’s so lovely. As I said in the episode, I friend-zoned him…”
The date garnered a huge 10 million views , following on from the success of her carpet interviews with the actor. When the pair first met at GQ, Amelia told him: “I’ve been trying to get a date with you for a while.”
To which Andrew responded: “You date a lot of people.” At the Golden Globes, Andrew continued the flirtation as he said: “I only ever want to see you”, before adding in “red carpet situations”.
Amelia joked: “You’re the one obsessed with me” as Andrew agreed and replied: “That’s what I’m saying! I’m scared for what this could turn into, and I’m not ready for that kind of thing.”
The series shot to fame for Amelia’s awkward and sarcastic persona, asking direct questions in the context of a romantic date in the slightly less romantic setting of a chicken shop.
Despite her own personal rise to fame, the presenter says she is not interested in pursuing friendships with celebrities. She added: “I consider myself a journalist, and once you start getting that close to the people you’re interviewing, it changes the way you can approach the interview.
“People want to hang out with me because I’m a fun time and I like to party, but I’m not interested in pursuing friendships with celebrities. I’m glad that I have my actual friends, but it’s really nice, especially in Hollywood, to make something that people love.”
The journalist continued: “(Chicken Shop Date) is a great conversation starter. (But) every time I’ve been in those situations, I’ve been glad to leave. Because it’s not real. I feel confident (being there), but after a while I no longer feel comfortable. It’s like being in the television.”
The series has had its fair share of viral moments, including a soundbite from her date with journalist Louis Theroux which led him to make a music video for his song Jiggle Jiggle with Amelia, singer Jason Derulo and musical group Duke & Jones.
Amelia recently hosted the Oscars red carpet for the second time, taking on the role as their social media correspondent. The April/May issue of Cosmopolitan UK is on sale from Friday March 7th.
