The Rideau Canal Skateway was closed entirely on Friday evening, with the National Capital Commission posting online that the move was made in anticipation of preparing the city’s top winter attraction to reopening for skating.
“This will help our team clear snow and prep the ice faster,” the NCC posted.
Skating on the canal was halted Feb. 24 following a stretch of warm weather, though walking lanes alone the edges were still available for the next four days in designated sections.
The skateway opened partially on Jan. 11, with the full length of 7.8 kilometres opened for skaters a week after that.
Friday’s online notice didn’t specify a target for reopening the canal to skaters, but the NCC did write that it expected skating “to start again soon.”
