Monday night’s Coronation Street had viewers on the edge of their seats as the ‘true’ identity of the arsonist was uncovered.

The Platt family had been reeling after their home went up in flames, a terrifying ordeal that put many Weatherfield locals at risk.

Miraculously, everyone came out alive, though Max Turner and Toyah Battersby were left fighting for their lives in hospital.

As time passed, the drama escalated with the revelation that the fire was no accident but the result of an intentional act, and surprisingly, Kevin Webster had CCTV footage that captured the guilty party from behind, in a hooded disguise.

With both David Platt and Leanne Battersby arrested as suspects, Shona Platt and Nick Tilsley scrambled to clear their names, reports Lancs Live.

In a pivotal moment of Monday’s instalment, Kevin shared the telling CCTV footage with Nick and Shona. A shocked Shona responded to the video with feigned ignorance when in reality, she had recognised something telling – a distinct hoodie that she associated with someone very close to home.

By the episode’s conclusion, viewers discovered that Shona had indeed pieced it all together as the peculiar hoodie was one she’d given to Max for Christmas. In a dramatic confrontation at the hospital, she berated him: “Kev’s got CCTV, you were wearing the hoodie I got you for Christmas, Max, what were you thinking? You absolute idiot, I mean why the hoodie?

“It’s got a logo for a skater brand that they only sell in one shop in Manchester. How long do you think it’s going to be until they trace it and trace the mug who paid for it?” Max was quick to reassure her it wouldn’t lead back to her.

The drama unfolded later on when David, freshly released from custody due to lack of evidence, discovered Max’s role in starting the fire and made a frantic dash to collect the discarded hoodie from a bin.

Despite his efforts, David couldn’t recover the hoodie but didn’t seem too worried, suggesting that it was probably already picked up by bin collectors, believing the evidence had vanished.

But as viewers reached the cliffhanger, it turned out the police had actually obtained the hoodie and Kit Green expedited its delivery to forensics while also embarking on a quest to locate the skate shop where the hoodie originated from.

With Paddy Bever, who plays Max, confirmed to be departing from the popular ITV series, fans are left speculating if this could be the storyline that sees him exit the show. Meanwhile, could Shona and David be implicated for perverting the course of justice?

Coronation Street airs Monday, Wednesday and Friday at 8pm on ITV1 and ITV X.
