DeepSeek Launches Janus-Pro Claiming to Outperform OpenAI’s DALL-E 3

DeepSeek, the Chinese AI company that has recently gained viral attention, has launched a new suite of multimodal AI models. These models, called Janus-Pro, are designed to analyze and generate images, and the company claims they outperform OpenAI’s DALL-E 3 in multiple AI evaluation benchmarks.

What is Janus-Pro?

The Janus-Pro models, which are available for download on the AI development platform Hugging Face, belong to a new family of models that range in size from 1 billion to 7 billion parameters. In AI, parameters generally correspond to a model’s ability to solve problems—larger models typically perform better.

Despite their compact sizes, DeepSeek designed the Janus-Pro models to excel at both image analysis and creation. DeepSeek licenses the models under the MIT license, allowing commercial use without restrictions. The images below show the capabilities of Janus and Janus Pro.

Performance and Capabilities

In terms of performance, the largest model, Janus-Pro-7B, has reportedly outperformed several well-known AI models, including OpenAI’s DALL-E 3, PixArt-alpha, Emu3-Gen, and Stability AI’s Stable Diffusion XL on two AI benchmarks: GenEval and DPG-Bench.

Although many models in the Janus-Pro family can analyze images only up to 384 x 384 pixels, DeepSeek asserts that their performance remains impressive given their relatively small model sizes.

Unlike previous models that were often task-specific, Janus-Pro aims to offer versatility across multiple applications—making it a promising option for future AI technologies.

DeepSeek’s Growing Influence

The release of the Janus-Pro models comes just after DeepSeek’s chatbot app skyrocketed to the top of the Apple App Store charts. High-Flyer Capital Management largely funds the company, which has been gaining attention in the tech world. Analysts are now questioning whether the U.S. can maintain its lead in the AI race. Additionally, the growing demand for AI chips has also led many to consider the long-term implications of DeepSeek’s rise in global AI competition.

As the AI space continues to evolve rapidly, DeepSeek’s developments, including the launch of its new models, are sure to keep the industry on edge.
